At Oakhurst Primary School we uphold and teach pupils about British Values which are defined as:
rule of law
tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
These values are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
To promote these values we show them democracy:
Children vote for their school council
School councillors feed back to their class and represent them in meetings
We have a Head Boy and Girl (and deputies) who are appointed by the Senior Leadership Team as ambassadors to the school and who also serve on the school council
We are a polling station, so we demonstrate the importance of the democratic process.
Each year our Year 6 pupils visit the Houses of Parliament to learn about the rule of law and the national democratic process and meeting our Local MP.
We teach children respect for the rule of law:
We have golden rules which are in a child friendly format so everyone can understand
We have a system of penalties for those who do not follow the rules
We have a behaviour policy which makes clear the rules and the penalties
We promote moral behaviour through PHSE, assemblies and our culture
We promote tolerance and respect for those with different beliefs:
Our religious education teaches children about a variety of faiths so they can understand those who are not from a Christian background
In assemblies we use moral stories from a variety of cultures and faiths
We model mutual respect and teach children to work together
We support and model individual freedom:
Very evident in reception where children are free to choose their own learning
Homework- our topic homework each term offers a variety of activities that our children can select from reflecting their individual styles
During lunch times and playtimes children are encouraged to express their individuality examples being our tranquillity zone garden, outside classroom, yoga boards, and a range of play activities.
On the 24th February 2017, we hosted a very special guest, Mr Justin Tomlinson, MP.Mr Tomlinson taught our pupils all about the process of passing a Bill through Parliament. The Bill that was passed by the Parliament of Oakhurst Primary School can be found here.
