Computing at Oakhurst


At Oakhurst Community Primary School, we acknowledge that technology is a fundamental part of our future and will play a pivotal role in our students’ lives. Therefore, we want to model and educate our children on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. We appreciate that the use of technology can allow pupils to access and share their understanding in more diverse ways, as demonstrated in the last few years, where computers have been crucial in supporting our children’s education. Our balanced, knowledge rich curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to apply their understanding creatively, which aids them to become skilful computer scientists. We want our pupils to understand that there is always a choice when using technology, and as a school we use real-life programs and examples of social media to model positive practice. We recognise that the best prevention for a lot of issues we currently see with technology is through education, which links to elements of our PSHE curriculum. The use of electronic devices is embedded across the whole curriculum to make learning creative and accessible for all. 


At Oakhurst, we teach the National Curriculum, using an adapted version of both Barefoot Computing and the Switched on Computing scheme from Rising Stars. Our curriculum provides progression across all three strands of computing: digital literacy, computer science and information technology, as well additional internet safety sessions throughout the year. Our curriculum for online safety is broad in covering a range of topics, including understanding current issues, such as: ‘copyright’, ‘fake news’ and ‘body image’. At Oakhurst Community Primary School, we give children access to a range of quality resources where they engage with a range of programmes and concepts. This facilitates the automaticity of key knowledge and skills, enabling them to make connections easily across different topics and subjects. Children are set independent projects that require them to solve real-life problems, as well as tackling challenges in group activities, which enable them to work collaboratively.


The use of technology at Oakhurst is used across the curriculum to enhance children’s engagement in lessons and provide support in their learning journey. Our computing curriculum gives children the opportunity to share their ideas and communicate their thoughts and feelings in the ways that suit them best, with support in place for those children with more specific learning difficulties, enabling them to meet the same outcomes as those children without needs. By providing alternative ways to demonstrate their learning, computing can help harness children’s creativity and give a true picture of what they are capable of, as well as boost their confidence and self-esteem. We believe computing to be extremely important for our SEN children, as the skills learnt in these lessons can be applied to wider learning and life skills, such as sequencing, precision, problem-solving, controlling and commanding. Touch typing skills are developed through appropriate intervention where children gain automaticity in use of a keyboard. Our lessons at Oakhurst are tailored to meet the needs of children in each class, with flexibility to allow for repeated activities and paired and group work if necessary.


The implementation of this curriculum ensures that when children leave Oakhurst Community Primary School, they are competent and safe users of ICT with an understanding of how technology works. We encourage our children to enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. We want learners to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well being. 

The way pupils showcase, share, celebrate and publish their work will best 

show the impact of our curriculum. We look for evidence through observing pupil’s knowledge and skills developed whilst working through different apps, through saved documents on Google Drive and Seesaw and through end of unit quizzes. Progress of our computing curriculum is demonstrated through outcomes and through the progression of skills built.
